<image:title>notes - on wanting to be close - First, I wanted to write about sexy perfumes. The dark corner of perfumery where bottles are named Divine Perversion, Secretions Magnifiques or Pornstar, where nobody seems embarrassed about it. And I did. But somewhere along the way the article changed too, because it turned out you can write about sex and end up writing about closeness, desire, intimacy, and all the things we carry in our nose without even noticing.</image:title>

<image:title>notes - on wanting to be close</image:title>
<image:caption>You wake up before them. The room is still dark. Somebody's underwear is on the floor, there's lipstick on a glass of water and you can't remember whether you planned any of this. The chemistry was brutal. The kind that makes you forget your own name, the one you never experienced before. Somewhere between the sweat, the skin and whatever was left of their perfume by 3am, something got encoded in you permanently. You know you're never going to see each other again, but you also know you'll remember the smell for years.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>notes - on wanting to be close</image:title>
<image:caption>You've been thinking about them for three days, not obsessively, just the way a song gets stuck in your head. The way they looked at you when you said something they didn't expect. The way the conversation kept going past the point where it should have stopped. Freud's abandoned Seduction Theory has little to do with the way we use the word today, but Universal Flowering takes the idea somewhere more interesting: into projection, fantasy and the strange space between wanting someone and actually having them. Black currant and lychee martini on top, vivid and slightly unreal, the way anticipation feels before reality gets involved. Then jasmine, sweaty and humid, flower made flesh. Tobacco underneath, grounding everything in the body.</image:caption>

<image:title>notes - on wanting to be close</image:title>
<image:caption>Sometimes somebody laughs and says: "Can I show you something?" A drawer opens, leather, a rope, some toys, nothing serious, just enough trust for another version of yourself to enter the room. The limited Phallic Edition bottle doesn't explain itself either, its cap shaped unmistakably as what it is. Sadonaso smells less like domination than curiosity. The message is the object before you've even sprayed it.</image:caption>

<image:title>notes - on wanting to be close</image:title>
<image:caption>You're on opposite sides of the world and it's midnight for one of you. You take a photo you wouldn't send to just anyone and send it anyway, after that you are running to catch your meeting. Desire at a distance has its own texture, it's different, not worse than the real thing. The desire is the same, only travelling further to get there. Cyber-sex smells like that distance. The screen, all the waiting, the version of yourself you only show when someone is far enough away to make you brave.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>notes - on wanting to be close</image:title>
<image:caption>You're in the kitchen and it's way past midnight, about time to leave you think. But your date looks at you and says: "You can do anything you want to me." It turns out that's a far more dangerous thing to hear than taking your clothes off. You hesitate for exactly three seconds. You didn't turn into someone else, you just stopped pretending to be the version of yourself everyone else gets to see. Leather against raspberry, caramel against animalic dark. The sweet and the severe, held in permanent tension.</image:caption>

<image:title>notes - on wanting to be close</image:title>
<image:caption>Nobody has showered in two days. You're aware of this, like you're also aware of exactly one person in a way that has nothing to do with conversation. There's woodsmoke in everything, dried sweat, the smell of a sleeping bag, mud, skin that's been inside a tent all night doing whatever it does when it's warm and close to other skin. It shouldn't work, but the body has its own logic, and right now it has decided that unwashed is exactly right. What you want is the person underneath the person. The version that exists before the deodorant, before the performance, before anyone is trying to be anything.</image:caption>

<image:title>notes - on wanting to be close</image:title>
<image:caption>It's cold outside and neither of you called a taxi after heading to the bar. A few glasses of red wine and the excitement of the same wavelength discussion heats you. Those conversations make the street feel shorter. Their hand finds your coat pocket somewhere on the second block. Two blocks later you pull them into a doorway and kiss them, neither of you is particularly surprised. Later you'll try to remember what you talked about and instead you'll remember this: the cold air, their hair, the smell of them up close, the specific warmth of someone who has already decided to stay.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>notes - on wanting to be close</image:title>
<image:caption>He didn't plan to stay. This is their first date, both of them are trying to stay polite. Somehow it's middle of the night and nobody moved closer to the door. He’s trying not to show how much she likes her, and she can tell he’s mostly failing. The fragrance stays so close to skin it almost disappears: musks, iris, ambrette seed, pressed flat against the body, requiring proximity to find. Fleur de peau means at the surface of the skin, and in French also someone who wears their feelings too visibly. Nomen est omen.</image:caption>

<image:title>notes - on wanting to be close</image:title>
<image:caption>Swimming pools have their own intimacy too. Chlorine, warm skin, wet towels, steam, and nudity in the changing rooms. Spunk doesn't really smell like sex. It smells like your crush who just came out of the water and is walking towards you. Your legs are already doing something you didn't ask them to do — shaking a little, the kind of muscle memory the body keeps without being asked. Maybe they'll be doing it again later.</image:caption>

<image:title>notes - what's on my shelf right now</image:title>
<image:caption>You probably know this story already because I shared it on Instagram. Last summer wasn't particularly easy. Before leaving Italy, I promised myself that if things eventually worked out, I'd come back and buy the bottle I'd left on the shelf near the Spanish Steps. If you've been following illatos for a while, you already know the rest of the story. Now every time I wear Buongiorno, I'm back on the rooftop bar of Hotel Valadier (Jaluna) with a Negroni in my hand, watching the sun disappear behind Rome. To me, it smells like fresh starts, or maybe second chances. A perfume can't change a year, but every time i wear it, i'm reminded that i can.</image:caption>

<image:title>notes - what's on my shelf right now</image:title>
<image:caption>Terre d'Hermès has been with me for years and I still think Jean-Claude Ellena created one of the greatest modern classics. I know people love talking about the mineral notes and the philosophy behind it, but honestly? I'm here for the orange and the vetiver, and for some reason I almost only wear it in autumn. Whenever I do, I think about Budapest. Grey skies, a little fog, golden leaves, walking around the city with no destination and a copy of András Török's Budapest - A Critical Guide under my arm, feeling like a tourist in my own city. If you've only visited Budapest in summer, I'd actually recommend going back in October and I can't recommend Budapest – A Critical Guide enough.</image:caption>

<image:title>notes - what's on my shelf right now - I bought Debaser after smelling it in Stockholm while I was there for a First Aid Kit concert. I know, there's a pattern emerging already.</image:title>
<image:caption>Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference. The fig note was what caught my attention, but what really made me fall in love with DS & Durga is the brand itself. David Seth Moltz and Kavi have created something that feels completely authentic, obviously influenced by music, art and New York, but none of it feels manufactured. They're just themselves and that's probably my favourite thing about the brand.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>notes - what's on my shelf right now</image:title>
<image:caption>In August 2023 I moved to Norway for work. A month later I had a heartbreak and instead of spending my birthday feeling sorry for myself, I booked a solo weekend in Copenhagen after finding a resale ticket for a sold-out Jungle concert. I tend to believe in little signs like that. Maybe it's naive, maybe it's spiritual, but it turned out to be exactly what I needed. Another 13 smells like freshly printed magazines and clean skin to me. I even had the label customised with my name on it, of course. When I wear it, I think about cycling around Copenhagen, Hart Bageri (and the many other ones too with amazing coffee and pastries), that Jungle concert, listening to a jazz concert at La Fontaine around 1am and the confidence that comes from realising you genuinely enjoy travelling on your own.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/690231d14bbacc07daf61753/1784999652116-HS4M4J2RP6AUF4U9G6R4/5.png</image:loc>
<image:title>notes - what's on my shelf right now - This one needs a bit of context: When I was in high school, Gucci Pour Homme II was my signature fragrance. Then unfortunately it was discontinued and I accepted that it was gone. Years later I walked into Massimo Dutti to collect a parcel and there was a tester on the counter, so I sprayed it innocently without thinking too much about it. I was like "wait a second...". And it was enough to instantly take me back.</image:title>
<image:caption>I'm generally not a fan of dupes. I think they often copy the result without respecting the creativity behind it. This is one of the very few exceptions I'm happy to make. If Gucci Pour Homme II was once your favourite as well, do yourself a favour and run don’t walk to the closest Massimo Dutti store.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/690231d14bbacc07daf61753/1784999652182-55HVED2XITU6DVQHE2E8/6.png</image:loc>
<image:title>notes - what's on my shelf right now - I discovered Bohoboco while researching queer-founded fragrance brands during Pride Month.</image:title>
<image:caption>Then I saw their perfume called Mango Yuzu Gasoline. The name alone was enough to convince me. It sounded ridiculous, weird and funky in the best possible way, so I bought it blind without thinking twice, and thankfully, it turned out to be exactly as weird as I'd hoped. It opens with an explosion of juicy mango before it dries down into petrol. I know it sounds weird, and it really shouldn't work, and still does.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/690231d14bbacc07daf61753/1784999653205-BDGPC8GHUGY469HYQ1U1/7.png</image:loc>
<image:title>notes - what's on my shelf right now - Apparently I have a thing for weird fragrances and generally questionable life choices. This one seems to continue the pattern.</image:title>
<image:caption>I bought it around another birthday trip, this time in Berlin, where I was seeing London Grammar one evening and Khruangbin the next. Standing in front of the Berliner Dom wearing Fantomas, I remember wondering what my life would've looked like if I'd discovered Berlin around 20 years earlier. Would I have studied there instead? Would anything actually have been different? Probably not. I guess I'll never know.</image:caption>

<image:title>notes - what's on my shelf right now - This is the loudest fragrance I own, I simply call it the A-Bomb.</image:title>
<image:caption>It's the one I wear when I want to be remembered: job interviews, dates or any occasion where you don't necessarily want to be the loudest person in the room, but you also don't mind being noticed. I actually wore it to the interview for my current job. At one point my now CEO smiled and said, "I can smell your perfume, it’s strong!" I apologised, and he laughed: "If you end up working with coffee, we'll have to keep you away from the cupping table." Luckily, I still got the job.</image:caption>

<image:title>notes - what's on my shelf right now - Another trip and another Italian memory. Y es, I love Italy. Shocking, I know.</image:title>
<image:caption>I bought this in Capri and it's inspired by Creed’s Aventus. It's a good one with a little more blackcurrant, more relaxed, and somehow perfectly suited to the place where I bought it. It's the perfect fragrance for a slightly wrinkled linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up, colourful loafers, an aperitivo by the sea and completely ignoring work emails.</image:caption>

<image:title>notes - the story behind illatos</image:title>
<image:caption>A year after that trip, I went back to Italy. Before leaving the previous summer, I'd promised myself that if everything worked out, I'd return and buy the bottle of Acqua di Parma I'd left on the shelf in the store next to the Spanish Steps. Of course I could have ordered it online, or bought it in Oslo months earlier, but that would have missed the point. Going back wasn't about the perfume. It was about keeping a promise I'd made to myself when illatos existed only in a notebook. It's funny how brands are often expected to begin with a business plan or a strategy. Mine began with a Hungarian word, a railway sign, a difficult year, and a promise to come back.</image:caption>

<image:title>notes - scent advisory</image:title>
<image:caption>“When I really think about why I love fragrance and perfume, it’s mostly for selfish reasons. It’s not for others; it’s personal, and it’s mine. My scents are inextricably linked to me — the good: the fresh blooms of the lilac that lives in my side yard; the bad: the trigger scent of Sweet Pea from Bath & Body Works from a time when I was having terrible anxiety; the weird: the grassy, yeasty smell of my dog’s paw; or even the banal, such as the smell of a freshly printed sheet of paper from my office. I know these smells like no one else does. A scent can transcend time and instantly transport you to a very unique place and moment; this is what I love. It can also be performative or transformational — who do I want to be today? This is why I loved the specially curated personal perfume recommendations generated by Gabor. After answering his questionnaire about my preferences, he sent me a super niche and distinctive list of five perfumes he thought I might love. I’ve still yet to try all of them, but they’re perfumes I’ve never heard of, and I can’t wait to get my nose on them all and make new scent memories from them.”</image:caption>

<image:title>notes - something so human it becomes magic - You describe Færal as an antidote to modern reality. What does “modern reality” feel like for you these days?</image:title>
<image:caption>Everything feels really dystopic to be completely honest. I often feel like our time here, on this earth with these resources, is extremely fleeting. At the same time, we’re inundated with all of this corporatized creative output that is becoming less and less human by the day due to AI. So færal is definitely intended to feel deeply, eerily human, so much so that it transports you out of this world and into another more magical one. It’s like the opposite of the uncanny valley, maybe – something that feels so human, it transcends and becomes magic.</image:caption>

<image:title>notes - something so human it becomes magic - Minou feels playful and nostalgic, but also a little rebellious. What was going on in your mind while creating her?</image:title>
<image:caption>I had just had a really hard 2-3 years, where I became really sick at the same time that my dog had a stroke. It was truly a brutal time, and my dog ended up dying ten months later. (He was fifteen, so he lived a long, beautiful life.) So when he passed, I made a commitment that I would put all of my energy into færal. Anyway two years later, after tinkering with a million overly complicated and fussy formulas, I decided to make something that just makes me happy. Seven versions later, Minou was born.</image:caption>
